KidSports is a half-hour award-winning educational television show featuring the world of sports for elementary and middle school-aged children, ages 5 to 12, with scenarios and segments appropriate for kids of all ages. Each episode is filled with skits and vignettes that address normal childhood challenges, insecurities, friendships and expectations.
Each show also addresses topics that can improve the mental and physical health of children, including fitness conditioning; skill enhancement; wellness; and the spirit of fair play. KidSports youth hosts and celebrity sports stars serve as motivational role models for children.
Sport is treated as a metaphor for life in each KidSports show where children learn empowerment, self-esteem, and decision-making. KidSports shows kids that it takes hard work to obtain goals and encourages practical strategies in their efforts.
Kids are active contributors to the show, through essays and contests, and feel the power of ownership in ways that go beyond traditional TV. We want to assist children in the discovery of their gifts and talents and teach them the skills necessary to reach their potential. At the same time, we plan to educate parents, teachers, and coaches in the developmental complexities of the school-age child.
A KidSports advisory committee of professional athletes, educators, nutritionists, and children was cultivated to counsel the show's direction. Plans are in place to develop a research model to conduct qualitative and quantitative studies in order to stay in touch with children's programming and content needs.
The KidSports producers have collaborated and coordinated their TV efforts with administrators, who offer advice, guidelines and support, from the American Center for Children's Television and the Annenberg School of Communication.
One main sports theme is featured per each KidSports show; key segments include:
Celebrity athletes instruct children on techniques to improve their game and their attitudes.
